When do you File a Claim on a Homeowners Policy?

There are a few different situations in which it would be recommended to file a claim.

  1. Property Damage- If your home is damaged by events covered under your policy, such as fire.

  2. Theft or Burglary- If personal property is stolen from your home, you should file a claim

  3. Liability Incidents- If someone is injured on your property or if you damage someone else's property then you should file a claim.

  4. Natural Disasters- If your home is affected by events such as floods or earthquakes, and you have coverage for these, file a claim.

  5. Personal Property Damage- If your belongings are damaged due to a covered event (like a burst pipe), you can file a claim.

  6. Loss of Use-  If you can’t live in your home due to covered damage, you may file a claim for additional living expenses, such as hotel stays or temporary rentals.

When to Consider Filing?

  • Significant Damage- If  your repair costs exceed your deductible, it is generally worth filing a claim.

  • Multiple Incidents- If you experience several small incidents, it may be worth filing if the total cost exceeds the deductible.
